Hello! This is where we will share photos of some of our landscape design projects located throughout California.

Deeter Buckner Design LLC and The Plant Man are based in San Diego, CA. We can be reached by phone (text or v.m.) at: Michael Cell: 619-980-5483, or Jenise Cell: 858-353-6369 (text or v.mail).

Michael Buckner, born and raised in San Diego, has been both a nurseryman, and a landscape designer in Southern California for over 40 years. Working as 'The Plant Man', and dba 'Deeter Buckner Design LLC', his design work has been featured in San Diego Home & Garden, Pacific Horticulture, books by Debra Lee Baldwin, and multiple other magazines.

Michael's also a nationally 'Certified Judge' for the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, a horticulturalist, a grower of rare & exotic plant material, a sought after speaker, an avid student of natural history, and a bibliophile.

Jenise Deeter-Buckner holds degrees in both Landscape Architecture and Fine Art (A.S. Landscape Architecture & MFA, Masters of Fine Art). She taught drawing/mixed-media and black & white photography courses at SDSU for three years, while earning her masters degree. She has over 10 years of nursery experience and has been working with Michael for over 5 years.

As a design team, they collaborate on all phases of the creative processes, which eventually translate into the formal blueprint of the design, or Concept Plan, drawn by Jenise.

A 'constant' in our design process is to be 'Nature' sensitive - to find ways to bring 'Nature' into the design. And in doing so, embrace those qualities inherent to Southern California, its native rocks, its changing elevations, its micro climates - the unique climates of its canyons, beaches, & interior desert environments - while making creative use in the landscape design, of the varieties of native plant material and unique cacti and succulents that thrive here.

Our team's design work promotes unique, expressive, drought tolerant, sustainable landscapes which enhance our client’s outdoor living spaces and reflect the client's personal narrative...their visions, dreams, and expectations throughout the processes - from the beginning consultation on site with the client, to the space’s final installation.

New Website Coming Very Soon!! The Plant Man San Diego.

Look for a new website coming soon for us under the name The Plant Man San Diego. Yes, it's a bit of a name change, but we're still dba Deeter Buckner Design LLC, and more importantly we've added a new member to our team!

In the meantime, you can contact Michael at:  619-980-5483 (cell w/text & vm).  Or Jenise at:  858-353-6369 (cell w/text & vm).

Michael and Jenise are excited about adding a new member to our company.  We've added Conrad, a general contractor, an expert in hardscape design and in construction of outdoor living spaces i.e. concrete, pavers, flagstone pathways, patios, pergolas, etc.

For years, Conrad was the head supervisor, general contractor for a custom homebuilder in La Jolla, Scripps Ranch, and Rancho Santa Fe areas.

His experience includes hardscape, concrete, pergolas, all types of exterior buildings, and all forms of detail oriented construction, including carpentry.  Conrad brings a creative and determined, ethical work experience to our team, and an education and degree in finance.

We know we're fortunate to have him!

The Marlborough Drive Garden - Kensington, SD, CA. This garden is featured in the newly published 10th year anniversary issue of 'Designing With Succulents', by Debrah Lee Baldwin!

This design flows with color and texture.  It's a lovely example of the kind of 'magic' that results when we hand-choose and hand-set, colorful cobble, ledgestone, and rocks with a beautiful design palette of sustainable succulents, cacti, and trees.  This is a 'head-turning' drought tolerant, sustainable landscape, that is the most 'photographed garden in Kensington' according to the owner.  And will be included in a future article, featuring Michael Buckner, in 'Garden Design' magazine.

Who says, "drought tolerant, water wise and sustainable gardens, have to be drab looking, or have the 'Palm Springs Look' of chipped rock/top dressing throughout?"

We say, "look again, at what can be done!"  To think this was once a flat lawn with a traditional straight, concrete sidewalk running through it. No more!!

This still is a small front yard, that we made look large, and added privacy and high focals, for the client.

New Photos of A Stunning Mature Garden in Rancho Santa Fe

This brilliant, mature garden in Rancho Santa Fe was originally designed and installed by Michael and his team some years back.  We recently returned to do one of our magical 'clean ups' in preparation for putting the home on the market.  And as it turns out, the home owners have already received and accepted an offer on the residence!  It certainly proves the point we like to share with our clients "the landscape sells the home"!

So good to be back to work on the blog!  We've been so bussssyyy, just finished the San Diego Cactus and Succulent annual show...lots of blue ribbons, trophies and sales of plant material over this past weekend.  If you haven't been to a show  before, make sure you go on line and check out the calendar of events for new shows in southern California (Cactus & Succulent clubs exist all over the state).  The show in L.A. at the Huntington is amazing and not that far off.

An Irresistible Colorful, Creative Sustainable Landscape on the Canyons of San Diego - A Wild Life Sanctuary for Both People & Nature!

Note how the following collection of images reflects the afternoon's changing sunlight.  It's the ideal light to document this creative, irresistible and glorious wild life habitat.  It's set along the canyons of San Diego and shares colorful magnificent sustainable plants in a landscape, of statues, rock work, container gardens, a birdbath, a wall of collective gems...and of course the sounds that are inherent to a nature retreat such as this garden is!! Enjoy!!

This garden is a true collaboration between a client's eclectic artistic collections and our team's endeavors to support her personal narrative!!

...More text on this post later...I'm out the door and back on site right now! Yeah nature!

The afternoon sunlight does just that, it lights up the landscape.

These last two photos were taken as the sun went down....
